Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Consultancy

No company is immune from natural or man-made disasters. When a disaster strikes a data center, knocking out essential computing facilities, the resulting downtime can mean costly delays in work accomplished and degradation, or even total loss of data.

SMS can help the customer in the area of Disaster Recovery, through our Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Consultancy services – a consulting service. SMS will help customers develop a Business Continuity Plan and plan their Disaster Recovery setup. There are 3 separate components that are offered for the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Consultancy service:

Component Purpose
Disaster Recovery Planning This phase encompasses the development and documentation of a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) for the customer. The development of a DRP should involve as many of the IT staff as possible, in order to get accurate input, leverage existing skills and knowledge, and get buy-in from the people that will have to carry out the DRP in the event of a disaster striking the primary site. One or more workshops will be conducted with the relevant groups, e.g. Data Center, application development, database administration and network management staff.
Business Continuity and Recovery Facility Selection(optional) Under this option, SMS will review the offerings of various disaster recovery vendors to determine the most appropriate site location and facility for the customer. Considerations will be given to security, flexibility, location, distance from primary site, network fallback options and offsite storage facilities. In addition, SMS will review the contract details and price performance of each potential vendor. Ideas to make the most cost-effective use of the facility will be explored in conjunction with the customer’s IT management.
Physical Security Analysis(optional) The Physical Security Analysis (PSA) involves a review of the primary site and its facilities, including access controls, environmental such as power supply and air-conditioning, fire detection and suppression systems, etc.The objective of the PSA is to define the current vulnerabilities the primary site has, and to make recommendations on mitigating the risks identified in order to minimize the potential of a disaster occurring. The objective of the DRP is to ensure a viable plan is in place to recover in the event that the preventive measures failed.
